Canadian passport photos are governed by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and are particularly strict when it comes to physical dimensions and presentation. Canada's requirements differ noticeably from many other countries, which often catches applicants out.

A Canadian passport photo must be 50mm wide by 70mm high, with the face measuring between 31mm and 36mm from chin to crown. The background must be plain white or light coloured, and the photo must be taken by a commercial photographer if submitting printed copies. Printed photos must also include the photographer's details and the date the photo was taken on the back.

Digital passport photos are accepted for some online services, but resizing errors are extremely common. Even small deviations from the required dimensions can result in rejection. Canada has one of the highest rejection rates for size-related issues, particularly when photos are manually cropped.

Because of these strict requirements, many Canadian applicants now prefer generating a compliant digital photo first and then producing prints only if required. This approach reduces trial-and-error and avoids multiple resubmissions.
