The Kiwi Access Card (formerly the HANZ 18+ Card) is New Zealand's voluntary evidence of age and photo identity card, issued by Hospitality New Zealand. It's the go-to ID for non-drivers, visa holders without a New Zealand licence, and anyone who prefers not to carry their passport. Photo requirements are similar to passport photos (35×45mm) but with more flexibility on background colour.

What Is the Kiwi Access Card?

The Kiwi Access Card is a government-recognised form of photographic ID and evidence of age issued by Hospitality New Zealand. It's widely accepted throughout New Zealand as proof of age for purchasing alcohol, tobacco, and other age-restricted goods.

    Who can apply:

New Zealand nationals, permanent residents, visa holders, and international visitors aged 18+. You can apply up to one month before turning 18, but won't receive the card until after your 18th birthday.

    Cost:

NZ$70 for online applications at kiwiaccess.co.nz, NZ$75 in-person at NZ Post or AA Centres.

    Validity:

    10 years from issue date.

    Why get one:

Licensed premises and supermarkets accept it for age-restricted purchases. Safer than carrying your passport. Useful for non-drivers, visa holders, backpackers, and international travellers.

    Kiwi Access Card Photo Requirements

    SpecificationRequirement
    Size35mm × 45mm
    QuantityTwo identical photos
BackgroundLight grey, off-white, or pale blue
    ExpressionNeutral, mouth closed
    EyesOpen, clearly visible
    GlassesAcceptable (unlike passport)
    RecencyWithin 12 months
    FormatColour digital or printed

    Background note:

Kiwi Access Card photos are more flexible than NZ passport photos — light grey, off-white, or pale blue all work. NZ passport photos specifically require light grey and prohibit white, so this is a meaningful distinction.

    Head coverings:

Not permitted unless for religious or medical reasons with full face visible.

    Clothing:

Wear contrasting colours — avoid white or very light colours that blend with light backgrounds.

    Quality:

Sharp, clear, in focus, good lighting with no shadows.

How to Apply for a Kiwi Access Card

    Online application (NZ$70):

Visit kiwiaccess.co.nz. You'll need: two identical recent colour photos (under 12 months old), proof of your address (statement, letter, or bill), and original photo ID (passport, driver's licence, or other government-issued ID). Card arrives by mail within 2–3 weeks.

    In-person application (NZ$75):

Visit a participating NZ Post or AA Centre with: completed application form, NZ$75 cash, two identical recent colour photos, proof of your address, and original photo ID. Card arrives by mail within 2–3 weeks.

    No photo ID?:

If you don't have standard photo ID, someone who can prove you are over 18 (holding a current NZ Passport, NZ Photo Driver Licence, or another Kiwi Access Card) can complete an Identifier Statement on your form. This person cannot be related to you.

Where to Get Kiwi Access Card Photos

    NZ Post Shops (NZ$15–20):

Nationwide, staff understand Kiwi Access Card requirements, can also process your complete application on-site.

    AA Centres (NZ$15–20):

Similar to NZ Post, nationwide, can process complete applications.

    Photography studios (NZ$30–60):

Professional quality. Studios familiar with New Zealand requirements produce excellent results.

    Online verification services (NZ$18.99):

Upload a self-taken photo for professional verification against Kiwi Access Card specifications. If compliant, receive verified photos ready to submit. If not, get feedback to adjust.

    DIY:

Digital colour photos taken at home work if you have good lighting, a plain light background, and understand basic photo composition. Must be taken within 12 months.

Common Kiwi Access Card Photo Issues

Background colour issues (20% of rejections):

Background too dark, patterned, or wrong shade. Ensure plain light background — light grey, off-white, or pale blue. Avoid very dark or patterned backgrounds.

Photo too old (18% of rejections):

Photos older than 12 months. Take new photos if yours are older.

Photos not identical (15% of rejections):

The two photos differ in lighting, expression, framing, or background. Both must be completely identical.

    Poor quality (12% of rejections):

Blurry, poorly lit, or pixelated. Ensure sharp, clear images with even lighting and no shadows.

    Expression issues (10% of rejections):

Smiling, mouth open, expression not neutral. Must be completely neutral.
