Irish driving licence photos are processed by the National Driver Licence Service (NDLS), operated by the Road Safety Authority (RSA). Applications can be made online or in-person, and your photo may be taken at the NDLS centre or submitted in advance. Requirements follow the same 35×45mm standard as passport photos.
Irish Driving Licence Photo Specifications
NDLS driving licence photos follow passport-standard biometric requirements:
| Specification | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Size | 35mm × 45mm |
| Head height | 29–34mm (chin to crown) |
| Background | Plain white or very light grey |
| Expression | Neutral, mouth closed |
| Eyes | Open, looking at camera |
| Glasses | Not permitted |
| Recency | Within 6 months |
| Format | JPEG or printed on photographic paper |
These are identical to Irish passport photo requirements. A compliant passport photo also meets NDLS driving licence requirements.
How the NDLS Photo Process Works
Irish driving licences are issued by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) through the NDLS. Applications can be made online at ndls.ie or in-person at NDLS service centres in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway, Waterford, and other locations.
Online application:
Your photo may come from your existing Public Services Card (PSC) records — the NDLS uses your PSC photo if available and up to date. If not, you upload a new compliant photo.
In-person at NDLS centres:
A photo is taken at the centre using standardised equipment, or you can bring your own compliant photo taken in advance. Appointments are required — book at ndls.ie.
Key difference from UK:
Unlike the DVLA in the UK, the NDLS does allow you to submit your own passport-style photo for in-person applications, giving you more control over the final result.
How to Prepare for Your NDLS Appointment
Whether your photo is taken at the NDLS centre or you're submitting your own, preparation ensures the best result.
Clothing:
Wear something that contrasts with a light background — dark blues, greens, or earth tones. Avoid white, cream, or very light colours that blend with the background.
Glasses:
Remove them for your NDLS photo. Irish driving licence photos follow the same no-glasses rule as passport photos.
Hair:
Style hair away from your face. Hair covering your face profile or forehead can cause issues with biometric face detection.
Expression:
Maintain a neutral expression with your mouth closed. A slight natural expression is acceptable — don't force an exaggerated neutral.
If bringing your own photo:
Have it professionally taken or verified by an online service first. An NDLS-rejected photo means rescheduling your appointment, which can add weeks of delay.
Renewing Your Irish Driving Licence
Irish driving licences must be renewed before they expire. Renewals can be started up to 3 months before the expiry date.
Validity periods:
Licences issued to drivers under 60 are valid for 10 years. Ages 60–70: 5 years. Over 70: 3 years (with medical reports required).
Renewal online:
Most straightforward for existing licence holders. Visit ndls.ie, use MyGovID to log in, and follow the renewal process. If your PSC photo is current, no new photo is required.
Renewal in-person:
If your appearance has changed significantly or your PSC photo is outdated, in-person renewal means a new photo is taken at the NDLS centre.
Cost:
€55 for the standard 10-year licence; lower for shorter validity periods for older drivers.
